An ankle fracture occurs when the joint is stressed beyond the limit of the constituent bones. These bones (tibia, fibula and talus) are held together by a fibrous membrane and a network of ligaments. Fractures can be caused by rolling the ankle in or out, twisting it from side to side, overflexing or extending the joint or coming down directly on it with severe force (e.g. landing on the ankle from a significant height). Common symptoms of a fracture are pain, swelling and bruising. With a severe fracture, there will also be obvious bone deformities. The braces below may help to stabilize the ankle and promote faster healing but, as always, seeking advice from a physician should be the first step in obtaining treatment.
