De Quervains syndrome is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the sheath or tunnel holding the two tendons that control the movement of the thumb. The cause has not been clearly established, although a connection with occupational risk factors is widely suspected. The principal symptoms are pain at the radial side of the wrist, spasms, tenderness, swelling over the thumb side of the wrist and difficulty gripping. The onset of the condition is usually gradual. A well designed thumb spica, such as the ones below, will usually reduce the pain of this condition and assist in healing.
