The DynaPro KN95 Respirator has five layers. Its first (outermost) layer consists of non woven fabric and the next two each consist of melt blown fabric. These are followed by a layer of hot air cotton and finally an innermost layer of non woven material. Dimensions of the DynaPro KN95 are 22cm x 16.5 cm (8.8 x 6.6 inches) unfolded. Folded dimensions are 11cm x 16.5cm (4.4 x 6.6 inches) – please see gallery photos. The respirator complies with the GB2626-2006 standard.

DynaPro KN95 Performance Levels

The DynaPro KN95 Respirator records filtration rates ranging between 99.6% and 99.8% for non oil particles as small as 0.3 microns. It therefore easily meets the 95% filtration rate that the United States National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) requires of N95 respirators like the Almedic N95.

Inhalation/Exhalation Resistance

In testing, this respirator records inhalation and exhalation resistance levels of just 150 Pa and 120 Pa respectively. These are well under the 350 and 250 Pa levels required for its standard and show that it presents very low resistance to breathing.

Low breathing resistance is important, as the KN95 respirator belongs to a class called filtering facepiece respirators. This means that it does not provide an independent source of oxygen. Instead the wearer has to rely on the oxygen that is present in the surroundings.

So, while the respirator has to efficiently filter out dangerous particles, it must also allow easy access to breathable air. The inhalation/exhalation resistance metrics we have described above are an indication of how well the DynaPro KN95 respirator does this.

The Total Inward Leakage (TIL) levels of the DynaPro KN95 Respirator are also impressive. Testers carried out 50 “types of action” on 10 samples of the DynaPro KN95. All 50 produced TIL levels under 11%, and the highest recorded level was just 6.0%.  Of the 10 samples subjected to testing, all the measured TIL levels were less than 8%, and the maximum level was only 5.6%.

This metric measures the ability of the KN95 respirator to prevent leakage of contaminated air through gaps between its edges and the wearer’s facial contours. By testing 5 types of action on each of 10 samples, the testers are able to evaluate the fit of the mask across a variety of facial shapes and situations.

KN95 Respirator Features

Head Straps

The DynaPro KN95 respirator uses head straps in contrast to the ear loop harness commonly used by KN95 respirators. The use of head straps provides a more effective seal than ear loops.

Nasal Splint

The respirator is also equipped with a nasal splint made from flexible metal. You can mold this splint to fit the precise shape of your nose and your facial contours just below your eyes. This feature will help you to achieve an airtight fit and prevent air leakage around the sides of the respirator. You will be able to do this even if your facial features are highly contoured or have an unusual shape.

Head Strap Adjustability

The use of head straps also allows you the flexibility to adjust your KN95 respirator for optimum fitting comfort as well as security. You can opt to wear the straps in several ways:

  • The upper strap may be worn above the ears and the lower one below the ears;
  • Both straps may be worn above the ears;
  • Both straps may be worn below the ears.

This flexibility means that you can adjust the respirator to a wide variety of facial shapes to ensure an air tight fit.

For example, if the KN95 respirator  does not provide a sufficiently tight fit for the lower half of your face, you can choose to wear both straps above your ears. This will increase the tension of the lower strap and create a tighter fit against the lower half of your face.

Similarly, for a tighter fit around the upper half of your face, you can wear the upper strap below your ears. That will increase the upper strap tension and create a tighter fit against the upper half of your face.

Another way to adjust the head straps to improve the fit of the respirator is to insert a slip knot on either or both straps to effectively reduce their lengths. This will increase their tension and create a tighter fit. If you have an usually small face or head, do this on both head straps for a tighter overall fit.

It is important to note that you do not have this flexibility with KN95 respirators that use the (more common) ear loop harnessing mechanism.

Testing The Fit Of Your KN95 Respirator

When you have made all the necessary adjustments, you can  test to make sure it properly fits your face by:

  • Placing your hands  next to the sides of your upper face and exhaling;
  • Repeating this process with your hands on either side of your lower face.

If you feel any air against your palms at any stage, you should make further adjustments until this does not happen.

Benefits Of Using A KN95 Respirator

As we have mentioned above, KN95 respirator masks (like N95 masks) are designed to block at least 95 percent of non oil particles of size 0.3 microns or larger from penetrating the respirator and gaining access to your nose or mouth.

This means that you can use a KN95 respirator for protection from particles like dust, paint thinner or smoke. This makes the respirator an invaluable protective accessory for workers in the mining, building construction and renovation industries.

However, they are also useful for protection against harmful viral or bacterial microbes. Many of these particles can be as small as 0.1 microns and are therefore much smaller than the 0.3 micron particles that these respirators can block. However, they must be carried by larger particles such as the droplets we exhale while speaking, breathing or coughing. 95% of these droplets are blocked from entering the nose or mouth of the wearer. As a result, the respirator will also protect against the viral or bacterial pathogens carried by these respiratory droplets.

Caring For Your KN95 Respirator

If you are planning to reuse your KN95 respirator, the following information on how to care for it is important:

  • Do not try to wash your KN95 respirator. If you do so, you will compromise its performance;
  • Avoid touching the outside surface of the respirator at any time;
  • Thoroughly wash your hands before you take off the respirator or put it on;
  • You can only re use this respirator if you are not using it in an environment in which there is a high likelihood of encountering viral or bacterial pathogens. If you are using it in such an environment, the advice from the US Centers for Disease Control is to ideally discard it after taking it off and not to reuse it.
  • Even if you are not using your respirator in an environment with exposure to viruses or bacteria, you should not use it indefinitely. Over time, the filtration performance of the respirator will tend to deteriorate. As a result, our suggestion is that you should aim to replace your KN95 respirator at intervals of 3-4 weeks at the longest;
  • If your respirator becomes wet, even by accident, you should replace it immediately as the moisture will compromise its performance.
