Brand:

SAM Pelvic Sling  is a circumferential pelvic belt with force control. It uses a single piece design that is intended to help to stabilize open book pelvic ring fractures while transporting the patient to a facility that can provide definitive care.

Open book pelvic injuries are caused by anteroposterior pelvic compression injuries. They usually result in a combination of ligamentous rupture and/or fractures of both the anterior and posterior arches.

The pelvic sling II comes with SAM® Medical’s patented AutoStop buckle. This buckle  helps to avoid over or under tightening of the Pelvic Sling. It does this by automatically detecting when the optimal compressive force has been reached, at which point it activates 2 prongs. The “click” of the prongs provide audible confirmation that correct application has been achieved.

For additional security, the sling is kept in place using a Velcro® strapping system.

SAM Pelvic Sling – Indications

This sling is indicated for application by prehospital and medical professionals or trained personnel. It is for use on patients who have, or who these personnel suspect of having, a pelvic ring fracture with possible hemorrhaging.

Other Features

  • Designed to resist extreme temperatures or exposure to sharp or hard objects and to while retain wearing comfort while doing so;
  • Standard size is designed to fit 95% of the adult population.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SAM Pelvic Sling used for, and who should apply it?

The SAM Pelvic Sling II is a specialized circumferential pelvic belt designed for the emergency stabilization of suspected or confirmed “open book” pelvic ring fractures. These severe injuries, often caused by high-impact anteroposterior compression forces, involve the separation of the pelvic bones and can lead to life-threatening internal hemorrhage. The sling’s primary function is to apply controlled, circumferential pressure to close the pelvic volume, reduce bleeding, and stabilize the bony fragments during prehospital patient transport to a definitive care facility.

This device is indicated for application by trained prehospital and medical professionals, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and hospital staff. It is intended for use in emergency scenarios where a pelvic fracture is suspected based on the mechanism of injury and patient assessment. Proper application by qualified personnel is essential for both safety and efficacy, as part of a broader trauma management protocol.

How does the SAM Pelvic Sling AutoStop buckle work, and why is it important?

The patented AutoStop buckle is the defining safety feature of the SAM Pelvic Sling II. It is engineered to eliminate the critical risk of over-tightening or under-tightening, which is common with traditional straps. The buckle automatically detects when the optimal therapeutic compressive force (approximately 180 N) has been achieved. At this precise moment, two internal prongs activate with an audible and tactile “click.”

This provides immediate, unambiguous confirmation to the provider that correct and adequate compression has been applied. This objective feedback is crucial in high-stress emergency environments, ensuring consistent and effective stabilization for every patient. By standardizing the applied force, the AutoStop buckle helps optimize pelvic volume reduction for hemorrhage control while mitigating the risk of iatrogenic injury from excessive pressure.

What are the key design features that ensure SAM pelvic Sling reliability and effectiveness?

The SAM Pelvic Sling II incorporates several robust design features for demanding field use. Its single-piece construction, secured with a Velcro® strapping system, ensures a unified and secure application that resists shifting during patient movement. The materials are engineered to withstand extreme environmental temperatures and resist damage from sharp objects or rough surfaces without compromising function.

Furthermore, the sling is designed to retain wearing comfort even under significant tension, which is vital for patient care during potentially extended transports. A single standard size is scientifically designed to fit approximately 95% of the adult population, streamlining inventory and allowing for rapid deployment without the delay of sizing. These combined features make it a durable, reliable, and user-focused tool for critical trauma intervention.
