Ankle Support

An ankle support provides support to injured ligaments of the ankle to help promote healing and relieve pain. It is usually worn after incurring an ankle injury such as a sprain. Ankle injuries are the most common type of sports injury across North America (approximately one third of sports injuries). You can suffer this injury while participating in just about every sport, from tennis to basketball to soccer. In the winter, ankle injuries incurred while navigating frozen driveways or sidewalks are quite common. As a result, ankle supports of one type or another are usually in high demand.

When choosing an ankle support, you should keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid a brace with laces that are too long or short. If you don’t you may have difficulty tying them properly;
  • Try to pick an ankle support that fits closely to your foot. Try to minimize gaps between your skin and the support;
  • Whether you need the brace for therapeutic or rehabilitation purposes, try to wear it during regular (everyday) activities; and
  • Be careful to always wear the ankle brace while engaging in sports that require lateral movements. These movements present an especially significant threat to your ankle.
